Project Info

Name: Bill & Melinda Gates Hall

Client: Cornell University

Location: Ithaca, New York

Project Summary

Constructed to unify the Computer and Information Science Departments under one roof, the new four-story, 100,000 square foot facility created space for faculty offices, a lecture hall, and state-of-the-art teaching and research labs for a variety of computer information disciplines. Funded in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the $60 million structure features several communal spaces that encourage transparency and dynamic collaboration, all enclosed by a glass façade with custom exterior perforated stainless steel panels. As construction manager, Welliver was involved in the project’s development from the start. After calculating first estimates, it was evident that the project was over budget and that the custom exterior curtain wall was a major contributing factor. To combat that challenge, the project team worked closely with the architect and the owner to create a design-assist bid package and then selected a glass contractor prior to the completion of the final design, which ultimately resulted in 60% in costs savings. Gates Hall is currently awaiting a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
