Breaking Ground on the Performing Arts Center

The Hobart and William Smith community and campus guests celebrated a momentous occasion on Friday, April 25, with the ceremonial groundbreaking of the Colleges' new Performing Arts Center. With nearly $28 million already committed, the Performing Arts Center represents the largest capital project in the history of the Colleges.

Law School Dean Celebrated During Ribbon Cutting

Cornell Law School honored outgoing Dean Prof. Stewart J. Schwab — who will depart the University at the end of the academic year — during a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of a new wing at the school. Schwab planned and saw the execution of his vision during the construction of the new Law School addition, which integrates the courtyards and fosters a sense of community.

RIT holds groundbreaking for Clinical Health Sciences Center

The Rochester Institute of Technology held a ceremony to kick off a construction project that will significantly expand its College of Health Sciences and Technology. RIT is breaking ground on the new Clinical Health Sciences Center, which will be home to the college, a primary care clinic—to be run by Rochester General Hospital—and the recently announced Wegmans School of Health and Nutrition.

Elmira church receives preservation award

With a nod toward the City of Elmira’s 150th anniversary, Historic Elmira Inc. on Wednesday presented its sixth annual Preservation Awards in at Hamilton Hall in Elmira College, which recognize historic preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive reuse projects in the area. Project awards were presented to Lake Street Presbyterian Church, Elmira College's Cowles Hall, the Gillett House, and the Chemung County government campus.

Two Welliver project managers were recently recognized as Certified Healthcare Constructors by the American Hospital Associate Certification Center (AHA-CC), designating them as individuals among the elite in the healthcare construction profession.

ENR New York announces winners of Best Projects 2013 Competition

Two Welliver projects were recently recognized in the Engineering News Record New York Best Projects 2013 competition, which honors the top projects within the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut region. Welliver's Elmira College Cowles Hall and Alternative School for Math & Science projects were selected from a pool of 67 projects by a panel of seven judges and were recognized at an awards ceremony in New York City.

Historic Cowles Hall Restoration claims ENR Best Projects 2013 Award

Welliver's $29 million Cowles Hall Stabilization and Restoration project, commissioned by Elmira College, was recently awarded the top position in the Renovation/Restoration category for ENR New York's Best Projects 2013 competition due to its impressive sequencing of exploratory work, shoring, demolition and new construction in a fragile building at risk of collapse.

Welliver's $17 million Alternative School for Math & Science Expansion project in Corning, New York, was recently recognized with an Award of Merit in the K-12 Education category for ENR New York's Best Projects 2013 competition for its extensive exterior masonry work and use of Building Information Modeling (BIM).

Design from Farm to Table: Cornell University Teaching Dairy Barn

Cornell University has no shortage of signature architecture, from its Gothic towers to OMA's Milstein Hall. Now, a new elegant facility helps support veterinary medicine and a very happy cow herd. Opened in September 2012, the Teaching Dairy Barn provides hands-on training for students at the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

ICSD First in NYS to Have Two Buildings Verified as Exceptional in Energy-Efficiency

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today announced that the Lehman Alternative Community School and Kulp Auditorium have received the New York Collaborative of High Performance Schools (NY-CHPS) distinction for high level energy-efficiency achievement. With these designations, the Ithaca City School District becomes the first district in the State with two NY-CHPS Verified School buildings.

2013 AIA Institute Honor Awards Recognize Excellence in Architecture, Interiors, and Urban Design

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has selected the 2013 recipients of the Institute Honor Awards, the profession’s highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interior architecture and urban design. Selected from over 700 total submissions, 28 recipients located throughout the world will be honored at the AIA 2013 National Convention and Design Exposition in Denver. Cornell University's Milstein Hall is one of the award recipients to be recognized for its excellence in design.

Guthrie Healthcare and Gilbane-Welliver break ground on $146 Million Corning Hospital

State and community leaders assembled recently to break ground on the future site of Guthrie Corning Hospital. With construction managed by a joint venture of Gilbane Building Co. and Welliver, the modern facility will feature 65 private rooms designed for patient comfort, privacy and safety. The new hospital is designed to be energy efficient and promote green operations.

Local Construction Management Company Reaches High Safety Marks

The construction management firm has recently received their fourth consecutive Safety Excellence Award from the Associated General Contractors of New York State (AGC NYS). Each year contractors from across the state apply for this award, which has become a benchmark for safety practices in the industry. Welliver received this award for working over 225,000 hours in the field with no major accidents, fatalities, OSHA violations or lost time.

Welliver Selected for Alternative School Expansion

The project scope included demolition of existing buildings; building a 35,000 square-foot addition to house science classrooms, art rooms and athletic space; and minor renovations to the existing school building. The construction management team has already begun budget, schedule and site logistics plans for the project. Welliver will be providing Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology services to streamline the construction process for the owner. Construction will begin in June 2011 and be ready for occupancy by summer 2012. The ASMS project is planned to achieve LEED Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
